TYRUS (AUSTRALIA)

Formed in late 1984 by founding members Alex Radanov, David Frew and Peter Hobbs with Pat de Garmo on drums. Tyrus began as a four-piece hard rock/heavy metal band first gigging on the 12th of March at Central Club in Richmond, Australia (Peter Hobbs' first public performance) and covered a range of heavy classics from Priest to Sabbath as well as a metal version of "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. Tyrus also included in this set a number of raw originals that later became some of Angel of Death's (Peter Hobbs) work. After a few lineup changes, Tyrus went into the studio and recorded a four-track demo which to this day is legendary as far as demo releases are concerned. The demo's first three tracks were later re-recorded by Peter Hobbs & can be found on his debut album. At this point, Tyrus were by far the most promising act to come out of the Melbourne scene. The demo had received favourable reviews by various local metal magazines, some German fanzines, and a few good reports were coming from England. The band now focused on releasing a debut album, but funds were short. At this stage, Peter, being the main songwriter, felt he could achieve greater success by going solo and was therefore the catalyst to the demise of Tyrus in late 1986 and the birth of Peter Hobbs Angel Of Death. Even though Tyrus never did get to record a debut album, there's no doubt that their unique sound left a important mark in the Australian metal scene.
